Understanding Venous Disease

The Cause

Heredity is the #1 factor. Ineffective valves cause blood to pool (reflux), creating venous hypertension that permanently dilates the vein.

Symptoms

  • Heaviness and pain at the end of the day
  • Swelling (edema) and fatigue
  • Nocturnal cramps and restless legs

Evolution Risks

  • Progressive worsening
  • Rupture (hemorrhage)
  • Stasis dermatitis (brown spots)
  • Chronic venous ulcer

Frequently Asked Questions

Treating small varicose veins causes only slight discomfort with no real pain. You won't need any anesthesia. Treating large veins originating from the saphenous veins with foam injections (Tromboject) is painless, comparable to a blood test. Endovenous laser requires local anesthesia. Once in place, you will not feel any pain.
You can drive, walk, run, and do all your usual activities (sports and work) immediately after. However, it is advised not to expose the treated legs directly to an intense source of light or heat for the 2 weeks following the injections.
Absolutely. Modern methods for treating varicose veins include endovenous laser and foam injections. These treatments are more effective than surgery.
In our clinic, all varicose vein treatments are performed by the physician only (Dr. Koniouchine).
